A training programme on ‘Seed Technology’ for Personnel of UP and Haryana State Forest Departments was organized by the Silviculture and Forest Management division of Forest Research Institute from 21st to 24th January 2018. In this training programme 21 participants of UP and Haryana State Forest Department of the rank of PCCF, APCCF, CCF, ACF and Range Officers from Silviculture Divisions of Kanpur, Bareilly, Varanasi & Lucknow (UP) and Pinjore (Haryana) participated.
During inaugural session of the training course, Dr. Savita, Director FRI said quality seed is a integral part of any plantation programme and should be given due importance. Such training programmes on seed technology would be very important in the capacity-building of the departments. Shri Pawan Kumar, PCCF, UPSFD thanked FRI for organizing this seed training on his department’s request, as the use of quality seed in forestry plantation programmes is being given utmost priority so such training programmes from time to time for the staff, are a must. Mrs Arti Chaudhury, Head Silviculture also highlighted the importance of the training course.. Dr. Manisha Thapliyal, Scientist F, S&FM division told that the training module covered all aspects of seed collection, handling, processing, seed storage, seed testing, seed certification and quality seed production testing, management of pests and pathogens of seeds and tissue culture. The participants were given practical exposure in the laboratory on seed handling, tests for seed viability and vigour, desiccation and storage of seeds. Earlier Dr. Ombir Singh, Scientist E, S&FM division gave a detailed report of the course and told that more emphasis is being given to practical exposure in seed laboratory.
A half a day field trip to Mussoorie was also organized for the participants. During the Valedictory session, a presentation each on the Seed technology and Seed Certification procedure followed by the SFDs of UP and Haryana was made by the personnel of the two forest departments.
