World Forestry Day

World Forestry Day was decided to be celebrated as the annual event on 21 st March by United
Nations for Food and Agriculture Organization. It was observed to make the people aware about
the forest importance the theme of each world forestry day (International day of forest) chosen
by the collaborative partner of forest. The theme for 2018 is forests and sustainable cities. Let us
make our cities greener, healthier and happier place to live in. To commemorate the day, Forest
Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun celebrated World Forestry Day on 21 st March 2018. On this
occasion, an exhibition for demonstration of technologies developed by FRI and a Forestry
Chaupal was organized behind the building of FRI building with the aim to bring scientists of
institute and common people to share the information and knowledge on forestry and related
subject. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Savita, Director of the institute. The Director in her
address said that this forestry chaupal is an open platform where farmers, students and other
visitors may interact with forestry professional and seek information about forestry. Dr. A.K.
Pandey, Head, Extension Division , welcome, all the participants and gave brief about the event
i.e. exhibition and also forestry chaupal. He said that in chaupal queries raised by farmers and
other visitors will be answered by subject experts of FRI. The visitors came to know about
different forestry interventions like Samradhi- a booster for cocoon formation of silkworm,
Rakshak- a wide-spectrum insecticide to control insect pests, ZiBOC – Bamboo preservative,
Products of Lantana camera, Medicinal and aromatic plants, quality seedling, Ganoderma and
other edible mushroom cultivation and many others through the exhibition and Forestry Chaupal.
Recent Publications of FRI were also displayed by the National Forest Library and Information
Centre (NFLIC). Information was also displaced about FRI Deemed University and about its
courses to visitors. Students of FRI Deemed to be University also put a stall and demonstrated
how to use waste material in useful manner. To attend the queries of farmers and other
stakeholders, subject experts of the institute remained present from 10:00 morning to 5:00
evening. During inauguration Dr. R. K. Tiwari, Secretary, Indian Council of Forestry Research
and Education (ICFRE), all scientists and officers of FRI were present. More 200 farmers,
students, representatives of NGOs, SHGs and others visited and acquired knowledge on forestry
during the first hour only.
A panel of scientists and subject experts of the institute including Dr. V. K. Varshney, Dr.
Amit Pandey, Dr. Sudhir Singh, Shri D. P. Khali, Dr. Santan Barthwal, Dr. A. K. Pandey, Dr.
Vineet Madan, Dr. Vipin Prakash, Dr. Ajay Thakur, Dr. Charan Singh, Dr. Rashmi, Dr. Krishan
Kumar VS, Dr. Devendra Kumar, Dr. K. P. Singh, Dr. Shailesh Pandey, Dr. Shailendra Kumar,
Shri. Rambir Singh and others were present to attend different queries raised by farmers and
other visitors.
Besides, all museums of Forest Research Institute remained open at free of cost for all visitors.
